Welcome

My name is Gina and I would like to welcome you to my blog!

On this blog, I not only share the dietary and lifestyle approach which reversed my metabolic disease and achieved my weight loss, but I also debunk many misconceptions surrounding obesity and its treatment.

I am 5'5" and was weighing 300 lbs., at my heaviest. I lost a total of 180 lbs. I went through several phases of low carbohydrate dieting, until I found what worked best and that is what I share on this blog. Once on a carbohydrate restricted diet, along with intermittent fasting, I dropped all of the weight in a little over two years time.

My weight loss was achieved without any kind of surgery, bariatric or cosmetic. I also did not take any weight loss medications or supplements. I did not use any weight loss program. This weight loss was solely the result of a very low carbohydrate, whole foods based diet, along with daily intermittent fasting and exercise.

I allow discussions in the comments section of each post, but be advised that any inappropriate or off-topic comment will not be approved.

There are years worth of content on this blog, so I suggest you use Labels to easily find the information you are looking for. If what you are looking for is not under Labels, enter it into the Search Bar.

Beware Of Novelties

1. What is "keto" ice cream? I see it everywhere in the market now but I don't know what's the difference between it and regular ice cream.

For the most part, it's a marketing scheme but there are differences.

As crazy as this is going to sound, "keto" ice cream simply means real ice cream. It's the way ice cream had always been made before highly processed/fat free versions overtook the market. "Keto" ice cream is made from cream, rather than the standard reduced fat or fat free milk, used in standard ice creams, which effects their texture. In order to keep the carbohydrate count down, "keto" ice cream usually uses stevia or sugar alcohols instead of sugar. These alternative sugars do not interfere in the texture or taste of the ice cream.

"Keto" ice cream usually does not contain any grain based fillers. This is not only done to keep the carbohydrate count low but because it's made from full fat cream there is no need to add anything to improve the texture. You should always check the ingredients though as not all "keto" ice cream is minimally processed and ingredients will vary based on flavor variety. Remember "keto" is not a set of ingredients that can or cannot be had. It is simply a macronutrient composition of very low to no carbohydrate. This means that if the "keto" ice cream has processed ingredients or grains for texture, it will still be "keto" as long as the ice cream retains a "keto" macronutrient composition.

The ridiculous thing about all of this is that they are using the name of a "fad" diet to describe something that has been around since the Tang Dynasty (618 – 907 AD). That's how absurd our food has become. Because they wanted to concoct ice cream that was reduced in fat or fat free, the real thing is now considered something special and out of the ordinary. So much so that it has to be labeled differently.

Ice cream is a very high fat food. Period. It is also quite high in carbs when real sugar is used. That's how it has always been and how it should have remained because when you try to alter it, it becomes a highly processed item filled with added refined ingredients that should not be there. After all, they have to add all this extra crap to it just to try and make it taste and feel like the real thing but we all know that there's nothing like the real thing, baby. "Keto" ice cream is the real thing, minus the sugar of course.

The high fat in this ice cream is problematic when it comes to obesity as leptin resistance will not burn body fat in response to dietary fat intake but the true obesogenic property in these foods is their sweet taste. Sugar dysregulates dopamine, not because its sugar but because its sweet, so sweetness by any other name is just as problematic. Soon you will be eating pints of this stuff for meals and replacing protein rich foods for high energy items like this, is detrimental.

Stay away from party foods and novelties. They should not be a part of your dietary protocol. This ice cream is fine on a special occasion or after Sunday dinner, because its much better than one with added sugar, but it should not be an everyday or every other day thing. If you are the type of person who loses control of their diet when these type of items are added, then you need to stay away from it all together.
